Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo County
El Paso de Robles means the pass of the oaks. The town was founded in 1886 around hot mineral springs by a group that included Drury James, an uncle of the outlaw Jesse James. Polish pianist Ignace Paderewski bought a ranch nearby in 1914 and planted wine grapes, an early start for what is now a region of more than 200 wineries around Paso Robles.
